Neurodivergence can include individuals with diagnoses such as ADHD, autism, sensory processing disorder, dyslexia, and dyspraxia.
I’ve learned a lot along the way about autism and neurodivergence through parenting my autistic child and learning more about my own neurodivergent wiring. I am passionate about helping other parents through the experience of parenting a neurodivergent child, and also with helping adults who are newly finding out they are neurodivergent.
I am a neurodiversity affirming counselor, meaning I believe that individuals have differences in their abilities and how they interact with the world, but these differences are not necessarily deficits or problems that need to be “fixed”. My role is to support you as a parent or neurodivergent individual in processing your own beliefs/emotions/thoughts and learning tools for living in a world set up for neurotypical individuals. You deserve this attention as an individual, and as a parent your child will absolutely benefit from a parent who has worked through processing their own “stuff”.
I help with:
- Processing suspicions a child or you yourself may be neurodivergent
- Navigating pros and cons to seeking out formal diagnosis/evaluation
- Processing emotions pre and/or post diagnosis
- Processing feelings of grief, sadness, disappointment, anger, fear etc
- Potential challenges to relationships (marriage, friendships, family) that come with parenting neurodivergent kids or discovering your own neurodivergence
- How to identify accommodations/needs in school, the workplace, and life in general and how to communicate them to people in your life
- Adjusting to changing expectations, requirements, and demands of parenting a neurodivergent child
- Processing the unknown
- Finding hope, comfort, joy, pride, and delight in your own life and your child
- Identifying strengths that come with being neurodivergent
- Figuring out how to thrive in work environments, relationships, and life in general in a world that is set up for neurotypical individuals
